During my time at Structurus, I was responsible for developing a range of enterprise Unity applications focused on digital twins, emergency response, and immersive VR training. I initially joined on a contract to create four highly optimised digital twins of operational oil production facilities in Iraq for use within the partner company's Advanced Disaster Management Software (ADMS). These large-scale industrial environments were built from engineering data and optimised to run efficiently while maintaining a high level of visual accuracy. Following the successful delivery of these projects, I joined Structurus full-time to lead the development of a cloud-hosted multiplayer 3D-VR Fire Safety Training platform. Working alongside a small development team, I replaced third-party systems with bespoke Unity solutions, refactored the project architecture, optimised performance, and implemented gameplay systems supporting up to eight simultaneous users. My work focused on creating scalable, maintainable software while delivering realistic immersive training experiences for industrial clients.
I designed this software in Unity to provide companies an alternative to team and task management. It allows management "Admins" to add staff members, tasks & subtasks and also assign tasks to staff with a drag and drop interface on a 3D view of the site. This provides an intuitive interface for both staff and employees to manage and track task progression and information.
I was responsible for creating a number of the early environments in Banter. I enjoyed the challenge of battling the technical limitations of the Quest 2 at the time. Balancing quality and optimisation I learned valuable skills in texture baking and model optimisation which I continue to use. I also gained valuable experience in QA testing in the approach to the launch of Banter.
I was tasked to create AR and webGL based applications in which users could preview and configure a Bothan home. With both IOS AR and Web solutions - users could use AR to accurately guage how the home would look in real world space utilizing accurate scaling and floorspace. The web browser solution allows Bothans customers to view and configure the homes during the important decision stages of purchasing.
During my time at Yellow Design, I developed a range of commercial Unity Augmented Reality experiences for the tourism and education sectors. This included contributing to the Titanic AR Experience, allowing visitors to view a full-scale reconstruction of RMS Titanic accurately aligned with the historic Belfast slipways; developing the Narnia AR Experience at CS Lewis Square, bringing iconic scenes and characters from The Chronicles of Narnia to life through interactive AR; and creating multiple immersive experiences for Armagh Observatory & Planetarium, including the Saturn V Launch, Solar System, and Moon AR applications. My responsibilities included implementing gameplay and interaction systems, integrating AR functionality, optimising applications for mobile deployment, and delivering polished, production-ready experiences for public installations and visitor attractions.
